Technology is wonderful isn’t it? All of us value being able to connect with our loved ones. We assume our technology is safe, but is it? The telecommunications industry is quickly rolling out 5G (fifth generation technology) without informing citizens of the potential health risks that hundreds of scientists and doctors are warning us about.
The 5G network requires entirely new infrastructure. Whereas one 4G network antenna can cover 31-155 miles, the distance between 5G antennas will be 820-984 feet. This means antennas must be placed every 6-10 houses and will rely on a network of hundreds of thousands (potentially millions) of small cell antennas. Each antenna will emit a constant stream of radio frequency microwave radiation 24/7, 365 days/year.
In 2011, the WHO classified non-thermal, non-ionizing radiation emitted by cellphones as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” based on an increased risk from malignant brain cancer associated with wireless phone use.
Dr. Martin Pall, one of the world’s preeminent scientists on EMFs, has been sounding the alarm for years, stating that EMFs impact all the cells of our bodies, activating negative effects including neurophychological and neuropsychiatric effects, reproductive effects, oxidative stress (which is involved in essentially all chronic diseases including cancers.) He stated: “I believe that the exposures we already have are producing major effects on our health… 5G will be vastly worse than anything we are already exposed to.”
The FCC’s exposure guidelines for wireless radiation have not been updated since the 1990s and were based on research from the 1980s that involved only short-term thermal effects, not biologic effects. Yet hundreds of scientists and thousands of peer-reviewed studies prove exposure to wireless radiation is harmful.
In addition to health and environmental effects, a 2014 survey published in Realtor Magazine revealed that 94% of home buyers who responded said they are less interested in property located near a cell tower, and 79% of them said they would never rent or buy such a property. It is estimated property values near cell towers could drop by 20%.
Local governments have the power and the responsibility to protect their citizens and ensure only responsible technology. Key provisions are needed in Waynesville and surrounding communities to ensure that small cell installations are permitted only in commercial and industrial zones and not within 1000 feet of residential or mixed-use zones, schools, daycare facilities, playgrounds, medical and sports facilities, parks, or houses of worship. Citizen petitions are being signed to require Waynesville to adopt a strong legislative code to protect our community.
